The Two Me’s at Work
Me #1:
The results and business-focused guy. There to be curious, assess, learn, understand and make a big difference. Respectful, pursuing real conversations with colleagues, regardless of title, to develop the best course of action. Sometimes gets it wrong; learns, adapts and keeps moving forward. Learning to identify and understand the interests of high potential / high leverage stakeholders, to advance relentlessly in pursuit of growth. A great teammate with no ego or pretense.
Me #2:
The career-conscious guy. There to be responsive, learn about my boss' priorities...and to fulfill them to the best of my ability. A team player, willing to help, join calls and meetings I am invited to and make sure that above everything...I am seen by those that matter most as a great contributor. Job security and promotions are my key drivers. I will do what it takes to look and seem good to those that matter most.
-These two me's mostly look the same. Sometimes I don't realize that I am behaving more like Me#2 when I believe that I am Me#1
-Leaders often inadvertently create and foster Me#2 over Me#1. Me#2's are easier, more flattering and show well
-Cultures that create and encourage Me#1 behaviour tend to win
-Cultures that cultivate Me#2 behaviour are busy, confusing and underachieving
You have to look beyond the surface to identify the current situation, the conversations to have and the levers to pull, to get to a Me#1 organization. And you have to work hard to maintain it.
